The curriculum design
Introduction: This curriculum is design to assist students in a vocational type activity. It is not design for the student to produce a vocational skill but to develop an awareness of what the community is made of and areas in which they might want to work. It is design for students with moderate to severe disabilities and is capable of going on field trips. The introduction to the activity will take place in the classroom and then will proceed on different field trips to places of employment in their community. The need to fill the transitions services and education gap in K-8 to ensure success in the upcoming years of high school were vocational skills are taught. The provisions if No Child Left Behind endorses this position. Also pre-vocational education is part of the student’s life skills IEP goals. Organizing Structure: This curriculum is a long term process. It starts with job assignments with the class and then extends into a month long lesson plan. The beginning of the lesson introduces the students to different occupations through story time and worksheets. This is a two hour process with breaks. The next level of the lesson is taking the students on field trips throughout their community which takes a month of different activities. Building a map of their community with in the class room take couple of weeks working 20 to 30 minutes at each session once a week To increase the success of transition into vocational goals.
